OUR STORY
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.
That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
THE MID-KANSAS AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE
The Komen Wichita Race for the Cure ® was started in 1990 by the Junior League of Wichita. The Wichita Race was the first Komen co-ed Race and the 4th in Komen’s history. The race was held the first weekend in April on the beautiful grounds of Pizza Hut International and the course ran through the Forest Hills housing addition. The 1990 Race was the largest first year road race in Kansas history with over 1,400 participants. The Komen Free Mammography Program was started with the first year’s proceeds, and continues today. The fund has provided over26,000 free mammograms in the state of Kansas. The Komen Free Mammography Program was the first such program for Komen nationally and served as a model program for many cities as they established their own Komen Race for the Cure Events.
In 1993, the newly established Susan G. Komen For The Cure Mid-Kansas Affiliate assumed control for the race from the Junior League of Wichita. In 1995, the Race was moved to the present location at Towne East Mall, with the course running through the tiny city of Eastborough. The event was moved to the fall to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness month (October) and to hopefully avoid cold spring showers.
Today, the Wichita Race attracts runners and walkers from several states. The race continues to be a favorite of local and state elite runners, as well as those participating in support of the Komen Promise and loved ones touched by breast cancer. The Wichita Race is an uplifting event, fun for the whole family, or a way for co-workers and friends to participate in a fun event and show support for a friend or loved one.
WHERE THE MONEY GOES
Currently, the Mid-Kansas Affiliate provides funding to cover breast screening costs for medically under served women and men. The Affiliate also has a number of education and outreach grants to provide innovative education and support programs in communities in Kansas.
The Mid-Kansas Affiliate—along with those who generously support the Affiliate with their talent, time and resources—are working to better the lives of those facing breast cancers in the community. Through events like the Komen Wichita Race for the Cure, the Affiliate has raised nearly $4M to invest in research, education, outreach, and screening services.
Up to 75 percent of all funds generated by the Mid-Kansas Affiliate stay in the 95 counties of our service area while the remaining 25% goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program supporting research awards and educational and scientific programs around the world.
